THE CASTRO

The lively Castro is known as the center for gay social life in San Francisco and is decked out with hip cafes and restaurants, mod clothing boutiques, leather shops and meticulously restored Victorian houses. The architectural center of the district is the Castro Theatre, a Spanish Revival theater built in 1922 by San Francisco 's premier Art Deco architect, Timothy Pflueger. Today, the movie palace hosts revivals, festivals and art films. Before screenings, audiences are entertained by live music played on a vintage Wurlitzer organ. Map 1, H6
