Grazing

The stereotype of the health-food-crazed San Franciscan is not altogether unfounded. But in this foodie town, the notion that healthy food is boring and unsatisfying can be kicked to the curb. Three new restaurants are filling bellies with naturally raised meats and fresh produce (often organic) in innovative combinations. Dig in.

* Café Lettüs Organic: An emphasis on local produce means most of the greenery here hasn’t spent much time on the road. Mango chicken lettuce cups, an open-faced shrimp sandwich, and avocado-and-grapefruit salad are as invigorating as they are tasty. Serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. 3352 Steiner St. www.lettusorganic.com, 931-2777

* Mixt Greens: Forget lettuce and shaved carrots; the combos here include the heartiest of foods, such as grilled filet mignon and seared ahi. Lines tend to be long, but a planned online ordering system should expedite the wait. Serves lunch M–F. 120 Sansome St. www.mixtgreens.com, 433-6498

* Modern Tea: Organic and fair-trade teas are served alongside satisfying home-style meals, with selections from both emphasizing organic and sustainably harvested ingredients. We love the idea of the “Civil War Waffles,” prepared on cast-iron waffle makers from the mid-1800s. Serves lunch and dinner Tu–Sa, brunch Sa–Su. 602 Hayes St. www.moderntea.com, 626-5406

Wine Country

Scents and sips
Late this month, lavender flowers will be in full bloom, and Sonoma County’s Matanzas Creek Winery is fortunate to have more than an acre dedicated to the fragrant blossoms. During the winery’s 10th Annual Days of Wine and Lavender event, visitors can stroll the beautiful gardens, explore the lavender barn, take Jeep tours of nearby vineyards, nibble on delicious food, and (of course) sip wine. Throw in an irresistible cheese table and live music, and you have every reason you need to make the journey up to Santa Rosa to check it out. Reservations required. $75. June 24, 1–4 pm. 6097 Bennett Valley Rd., Santa Rosa. www.matanzascreek.com, (800) 590-6464

What is one of the best places to take a dad for a Father’s Day treat?

If my own dad were to visit during Father’s Day weekend, I would love to take him to a Giants game. Even if the Giants were away, we’d do the tour of the ballpark. Another great choice would be golf at one of our incredible courses, such as the spectacular Half Moon Bay Golf Links.

What are some unexpected places where you can unwind in San Francisco?

My absolute favorite place to unwind is in Alta Plaza Park, at the top of the Steiner Street steps, sitting on the right side stair pediment, looking south over the city, especially during sunset. I also find something very soothing about the top of the Lyon Street steps, overlooking the bay, wrapped in the fog that carries the smell of the eucalyptus from the Presidio.

On the lovely warm days this month, what’s your favorite cool sweet?

When was the last time you had an It’s It [ice cream sandwich]? That’s usually what I crave when the weather gets warm; I head to the nearest corner store that sells them, and then to the nearest park bench.

You have a personal appreciation of the world’s great museums. Which San Francisco museums should not be missed for visitors who share the same appreciation?

The de Young museum and the Legion of Honor. The controversial design of the de Young building itself is worth the trip, just to walk around the building to study all of the angles and viewpoints. I’m very much looking forward to the upcoming Monet exhibit at the Legion of Honor. The Legion itself, situated on that hill, is spectacular.
