JAPANTOWN

The three-block area in the city's Western Addition bordered by Geary Boulevard and Post, Laguna and Fillmore streets is the hub for the Japanese community in San Francisco . Opened in the spring of 1968, the Japan Center offers art galleries, bookstores, Japanese restaurants, karaoke bars, Kabuki Springs & Spa (a traditional Japanese spa), movie theaters and dozens of shops selling Japanese crafts and other imported goods. The focal point of the Center is the 32,000-square-foot Peace Plaza and Pagoda on Post Street , a gift to San Francisco from the people of Japan . The intricate five-roofed pagoda was inspired by the miniature round pagodas dedicated to eternal peace by the Empress Koken more than 1,200 years ago. Map 1, H4
