MISSION DISTRICT

In the early 1900s the Mission was predominantly Irish; today it's a fusion of Hispanic families, artists, the bohemian set, and an increasing number of well-paid young professionals who populate it. The recent influx of Gen-X-ers has infused these weathered streets with a new wave of bars, ethnic restaurants and mod fashion boutiques, particularly along Valencia and Guererro, between 14th and 24 streets, where you'll also find some of the city's hippest, most unpretentious, bars. Other attractions include the Roxie Cinema, the coolest indie film house in town. The neighborhood gets its name from Mission Dolores, located at the corner of 16th and Dolores streets. This city's oldest standing structure (built in 1791, with four-foot-thick adobe walls) has survived four earthquakes and is open daily for self-guided tours. Map 1, I-J 6-7
