What's Hot

Sticky Situation
The encaustic medium—a sticky amalgam of beeswax, tree resin, and pigments applied to wood panels—is about to receive special recognition in Here and Now—Encaustics and Time, a juried exhibit at MMGalleries featuring 20 artists from across the nation. This millennia-old art form, characterized by rich textures and vibrant hues, has inspired numerous painted and sculptural works that will be on display through Aug. 25. 101 Townsend St. www.mmgalleries.com, 543-1550 Map 1, F7

rovocation
Meditating on themes of time, memory, and dreams, Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto’s photographic installation at the de Young Museum chronicles his 30-year career in a series of aesthetically striking and thought-provoking pieces. In this retrospective, Sugimoto toys with audience perception, blurring the boundary between what is real and what is illusory. From 12th-century Buddhist sculptures to Madame Tussaud’s wax figures, from found-object art to meta-photographic musings, the subjects of his photographic chefs d’oeuvre inspire the viewer to contemplate reality and the human need to represent and reinterpret it. Through Sep. 23. Golden Gate Park, www.de youngmuseum.org, 750-3600 Map 2, E5
