Wine+Spirits
Crazy for Caipirinhas
Fresh lime teased with cane sugar, then smashed with ice and doused with cachaça, the national spirit of Brazil—these are the ingredients of the tasty and trendy cocktail known as a caipirinha. One of the top producers of premium white (unaged) cachaça is the Leblon, named after a famous beach in Rio de Janeiro. Fresh-pressed from the best Brazilian sugar cane, Leblon is hand-distilled in copper stills and then shipped to the Cognac region of France, where it is aged in oak casks. There it is blended for complexity, bouquet, and consistency, and filtered three times like a fine wine. The end result is an ultra-smooth, all-natural spirit with a lively, fruit-forward nose, laced with delicate notes of honey and vanilla—perfect for those refreshing caipirinhas and mojitos. —Irene Moore

WHERE TO DRINK IT Try a caipirinha made with Leblon, as well as other Brazilian cocktails, at Nuevo Latino restaurant Destino (1815 Market St., 552-4451). The restaurant's daily happy hour features two-for-one drinks from 5–7 pm.
