UNION SQUARE

The recently renovated Union Square is at the heart of the city's luxury shopping and hotel district. Bordered by Geary, Powell, Post and Stockton streets, the landmark is within two blocks of the terminus for the Powell street cable car lines, the Visitor Information Center and popular departments stores like Macy's, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. The eclectic galleries, clothing stores and furniture shops of Sutter Street are a short walk away. Union Square derives its name from the pro-Union rallies held there during the Civil War; in the center is the Dewey Monument , which commemorates Admiral Dewey's triumph over the Spanish navy in 1898. On the east side, set off by a pair of regal wrought-iron gates, is the entrance to Maiden Lane . Accessible to foot traffic only, this tiny byway boasts some of the chicest boutiques in town. Maiden Lane's auto-free status has also made it a mecca for outdoor cafes and restaurants-great resuscitation stations for sale-weary shoppers. Map 2, D 5-6
