SAN FRANCISCO NEIGHBORHOODS
CASTRO—Known as the gay Mecca, the Castro has also blossomed into a top shopping and culinary destination. Some of the city’s best home-décor boutiques, and shops offering everything from clothing to pet accessories to jewelry, join every kind of restaurant imaginable. At the center of the neighborhood are Harvey Milk Plaza, named for San Francisco’s first openly gay elected official, and the historic Castro Theatre.

CHINATOWN —The oldest and one of the largest Chinatowns in North America, San Francisco’s version offers everything you’d expect: authentic restaurants (you must have dim sum), produce and meat markets, tea shops, bakeries, and souvenir stores. The main thoroughfare, Stockton Street, is bustling at all hours of the day and night.

CIVIC CENTER/HAYES VALLEY—City Hall, in the Civic Center neighborhood, is one of the finest examples of Beaux Arts architecture in the world. FINANCIAL DISTRICT—Probably the most recognizable part of the San Francisco skyline, the pyramid-shaped Transamerica Building anchors the city’s Financial District. On the water, the Ferry Building houses some of the city’s best eateries and epicurean delights, from fresh herbs to handmade chocolate. It is also home to the wildly popular Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings.

FISHERMAN’S WHARF—A favorite of visitors, the wharf has an abundance of restaurants, attractions, and shops to keep you busy all day long. It is the launching point for excursions to Alcatraz and home to Pier 39, which houses even more restaurants and shops, and harbors the famous sea lions who make their home on the docks. Just up the street, you’ll find The Cannery and Ghirardelli Square, an open-air retail center whose highlight is the Ghirardelli Ice Cream and Chocolate Shop.

HAIGHT-ASHBURY—The Summer of Love may be over, but the legendary Haight-Ashbury neighborhood still offers peace, love, and happiness to all who visit. Old shops, such as the original Ben and Jerry’s and Amoeba Records, join new ones, and inexpensive eateries abound in this fun neighborhood. It is a great entry point for Golden Gate Park, which comprises more than 1,000 acres and is home to the deYoung Museum, the Japanese Tea Garden, the Strybing Arboretum, the Children’s Carousel, the Conservatory of Flowers, and so much more.

JAPANTOWN—The five-tiered Peace Pagoda, a gift to San Francisco from the people of Osaka, Japan, acts as the centerpiece for this neighborhood, which comprises about six square blocks. Japantown Center is the shopping and dining center, offering restaurants, shops, a movie theater, and the very popular Kabuki Springs & Spa.

MARINA/COW HOLLOW—Bordered by Fort Mason and the Marina Green on the north and the hills of Pacific Heights on the south, these two neighborhoods offer some the city’s best shopping and dining. Residents here love the outdoors, whether flying kites along the water in Crissy Field or soaking up the sun at one of the plentiful and popular outdoor cafés along the main shopping drags: Union Street (Cow Hollow) and Chestnut Street (Marina). Here you’ll also find the splendid Palace of Fine Arts, left over from the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exhibition.

MISSION DISTRICT—The center of Latino culture in San Francisco grew up around one of the city’s oldest structures, the Franciscan mission known as Mission Dolores. On Mission Street, fantastically fresh ethnic food, public art, and a host of shops and businesses by day give way to some of the city’s hippest bars and clubs by night.

NOB HILL/RUSSIAN HILL—Once and still inhabited by the city’s wealthiest and most powerful families, the neighborhood is also the highest point on the cable-car line. Both hills are bordered on the west side by bustling Polk Street, home to galleries, restaurants, and many unique shops.

NOE VALLEY (off map)—Easy-going 24th Street anchors the Noe Valley neighborhood, which attracts many young families with their strollers and puppies. Popular restaurants and shops line the street, where people actually do stop to chat. Check out the Victorian and Edwardian architecture that the neighborhood is known for.

NORTH BEACH—There’s a caffe, trattoria, or ristorante for every taste and budget in this colorful Italian neighborhood. You can’t beat the view from Coit Tower, which also features spectacular murals and a crazy collection of parrots. North Beach was the birthplace of the Beat Movement, and you’ll find no shortage of bookstores and coffee houses to remind you.

PACIFIC HEIGHTS—Some of the city’s most dazzling mansions with even more dazzling views sit on the hills of Pacific Heights; on a clear day, you can see a 180-degree panoramic view from the corner of Fillmore and Webster streets. Upper Fillmore Street is one of the city’s most popular shopping and dining destinations.

RICHMOND AND SUNSET DISTRICTS—These two neighborhoods, separated by Golden Gate Park, boast the Pacific Ocean as their western neighbor. This area is often referred to as San Francisco’s “other Chinatown,” and many other cultures are well represented in the numerous shops and restaurants in these bustling neighborhoods.

SAUSALITO/TIBURON—Two of the Bay Area’s most beautiful bayfront cities, Sausalito and Tiburon are easily reached by ferry or a quick jaunt north over the Golden Gate Bridge. Sausalito has a very accessible main strip, Bridgeway, with lots of shops, galleries, and restaurants, not to mention a killer view of San Francisco. Tiburon is a bit more upscale, with unparalleled waterfront dining.

SOUTH OF MARKET (SOMA)/CHINA BASIN—SoMa was “settled” by dot-com ingenues, many of whom went bust, but not before they helped turn this area into one of the hippest and most exciting neighborhoods in the city. Don’t miss the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art on the eastern side. Follow paths populated by art galleries, über-chic bars and nightclubs south to China Basin, where new developments and modern live/work lofts flow around AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants.

TENDERLOIN —Sometimes called “Lower Nob Hill,” the Tenderloin is a great place to score authentic Pakistani/Indian food, as well as find local hangouts for affordable eats. The neighborhood is also home to the legendary Great American Music Hall.

UNION SQUARE—Union Square proper was refurbished several years ago and provides a great center point from which to navigate the San Francisco flagships of the finest designer boutiques and department stores from around the world.
